NAS FileZerver
Create User/Group Accounts
User authentication can be accomplished via two methods. User and Groups accounts can be created manually in the bindery/database of the NAS server. Authentication may also be achieved from a remote NT or NetWare server.
Add
If user/group accounts are created in the bindery/database and Master Security has been enabled, when a user attempts to connect to the NAS server only the initial network logon prompt will appear. No specific prompt from the unit will appear.
- From the main administration page select Security Management.
- Click on the User Management link.
- Click on the Add link.
- Enter information about the user.
- User Name can be up to 24 alphanumeric characters
- Password can be up to 15 alphanumeric characters.
- Click on the Save button
Groups are created by following a similar process using the Group Management link.
User Autodeletion
A total of 1000 users and 125 groups can be added to the NAS server. If more than 1000 users need access to the system enable User Autodeletion. This feature removes the user from the User List as soon as he/she disconnects from the NAS server. Any Group account imported along with the User does not get removed.
This option can also be used in conjunction with NT Domain and NDS integration. But it is automatically disabled when User Quotas are in effect.
- From the main administration page select System Settings.
- Select General System Information
- Use the drop-down list to set Remove Inacctive Users to YES.
- Click on the Save buton
Import
If the NAS server is running with NetWare NCP or Windows SMB servers it is possible to automate the creation of users and groups, by entering the authentication server name in the correct field of the Network Management page and rebooting the NAS server. Authentication is now through the network, rather than to the NAS server. When a logon request is made the NAS server, the username/password entered is forwarded on to the network file server and is verified by the NetWare NDS/Bindery or NT PDC database.
Caveat Emptor. Master Security must be enabled before the NAS server can be added to the Domain or NDS tree. If it is enabled after the fact, users/groups will not import correctly.
NT (SMB)
- From the main administration page select Network Management.
- Select the Windows & OS/2 (CIFS) link.
- Enter the PDC name in the Primary Domain Controller box.
- Enter the IP address of the PDC in the PDC IP Address box.
- Use the drop down lists to change the Auto Create Users and Auto Create Groups options to Yes.
- Click on the Save button.
- Reboot the NAS server.
After the unit reboots, all users who attempt to log into the NAS server will be verified by the PDC. If the username/password is valid the account will be added to the NAS server database. Access rights to shares may then be modified for that account.
Novell NetWare (NCP)
To import users from NDS, the NAS server must be integrated into NDS. This process is done through the ZerverView utility. Two logon prompts will appear; one for general network logon and one to logon to the NAS server. To prevent this use the ATTACH command in the login script to enter the username/password automatically.
- From the main administration page select Network Management.
- Select the NetWare NCP link.
- Enter the authentication server name in the Bindery Server field.
- Use the drop down lists to change the Auto Create Users and Auto Create Groups options to Yes.
- Click on the Save button.
- Reboot the NAS server.
After the unit reboots, all users who attempt to log into the NAS server will be checked against NDS or the bindery. If the username/password is valid, the account will be added to the NAS server bindery. Access rights to shares may then be modified for that account.
NDS Integration
ZerverView software is used to prepare NDS integration. Supervisor rights to the container where the NAS server will be installed are required.
- Start the ZerverView program. As the program begins, the utility will browse the workstation's subnet to discover all NAS servers on the subnet. When this discovery process is completed all NAS servers are listed in the ZerverView window.
- Highlight the unit that is to be modified.
- Click on the NDS Installation icon (tree), or select the Options menu, and NDS Installation.
- To continue with the process, click on Yes.
- Browse through the NDS Tree to locate the container or context where the NAS server is to be installed.
- Highlight the correct container/context and click on OK.
- A window will open that displays the status of the installation. Click on Install to continue.
A server object and a volume object will be created in the NDS Tree. The NAS server will reboot. After the unit has rebooted, it is integrated into NDS and can be managed like any other NDS volume by using Novell's NWAdmin utility.
