Virtual CD/DVD Server - CDM
Virtual Shares
What is a Share?
A share is a network resource. Microsoft defines a share as "an item such as a file, folder, or printer that another computer has made available for you to use on the network." When using a Windows-based workstation a share is visible as a yellow folder in Network Neighborhood. Novell uses the term "volume" for the same concept. These two words, share and volume, are used interchangeably in these technical pages.
The Share Control page allows you to configure shares in the Virtual DVD Server. There are two types of share possible in the Virtual DVD Server: physical and virtual. A physical share is either the physical CD-ROM drive (the actual device) or an Imaged CD.
What is a Virtual Share?
A virtual share is a collection of physical shares. The Virtual DVD Server has one virutal share by default: the ROOT share. All Imaged CDs are collected together in this virtual share. A network mapping to this virtual share will allow users to access all the CD/DVD data in the unit via a single drive letter.
It is possible to create additional virtual shares.
- From the main Administration page, select Share Control.
- Use the drop down list to select a Virtual Share.
- Click on the Configure button.
- Place a check in the "Enable User Defined Share" box.
- Enter a name for the share in the Share Name field.
- If you want to restrict the number of concurrent connections to this share, select the "Specify Maximum Numver of Users" option. Place a number in the field.
- Select the physical shares to be part of this virtual share.
- You can click on individual physical shares, or select groups by holding down the Shift and Down-Arrow keys.
- Make any desired modification to the User Level security for this virtual share.
- Click on the Update button when done.
