Virtual CD/DVD Server - CDM

Security
Share Level Security
The Virtual DVD Server by default has a share-level security system. A common username/password may be set for each Physical Share, or Virtual Share (used for global CD/DVD access). If this default setting is used, but no username/password is created for the share, the practical effect is that every network user will be allowed access to every share.

User Level Security
The Virtual DVD Server has a local database (bindery) that is used to add User and Group accounts locally (directly) to the unit. These accounts are used to provide authentication when a user attempts to connect to the unit.

To enable User Level Security:

  1. From the main Administration page, click on Configuration.
  2. Select the protocol to which the security will apply.
    1. CIFS/SMB. This is the Windows NT protocol.
    2. NCP. This is the Novell NetWare protocol.
  3. Use the drop down list to select User Level
  4. Click on the Update button

After UserLevel Security is enabled, a list of users/groups is needed to set assess privileges for shares. Use the following steps to manually create user/group accounts.

  1. From the main Administration page, click on Share Control.
  2. The lower portion of the screen has links under the heading "Manage Users/Clients".
  3. Select the link related to the protocol confiured for User Level Security.
  4. The Manage Users page will open.
  5. Click on the Add a new user link.
    1. SMB Users. You will be prompted to enter the Domain name, and the new User name. To create a User account, select the User option. To create a Group account, select the Group option.
    2. NCP Users/Groups.Enter the new account name in the field.
  6. Click on the Add button.

Import Accounts
It is possible to import usernames/passwords into the bindery/database of the Virtual DVD Server and assign permissions based on the user.

NT
The Virtual DVD Server and the PDC must be in the same domain. Users with trust relationships to the PDC can connect to the Virtual DVD Server from other domains.

  1. From the main Administration page, click on Configuration.
  2. Scroll to the SMB section.
  3. Place a check in the "Auto Create User" box.
  4. Click on the Update button at the bottom of the screen.

Novell
User accounts are imported from a 3.12 bindery server, or a 4.11 (or higher) server running IPX with a bindery context.

  1. From the main Administration page, click on Configuration.
  2. Scroll to the NCP section.
  3. Place a check in the "Auto Create User" box.
  4. Enter the name of the applicable bindery server in the box.
  5. Click on the Update button at the bottom of the screen.

Assign access rights to the imported user names When a user logs into the network the PDC or Bindery server will validate the account and allow access to the network. When a user attempts to login to the Virtual DVD Server the first time, access will be denied. But the valid username/password will be placed in the Virtual DVD Server user database.

  1. From the main Administration page, select the Share Control menu.
  2. Select the virtual share to which the user will be mapped and click on the Configure button.
  3. Scroll down to the "User Level Security Permissions Lists" section.
  4. Click on the applicable protocol link.
  5. The newly imported username/password will be listed.
  6. Click on the radio button to assign "Read" rights to the share.
  7. Click on the Update button when done.
