Virtual DVD Server - CDH
Managing CDs and DVDs
Creating CD Images
"Imaging" is the process of copying a CD-ROM or DVD to a hard drive. The Imaged CD will appear as a network attached disc, accessible via a network drive mapping, or a UNC path.
To Image CD/DVDs using the DVD drive(s) of the Virtual DVD Server, the drive bay must be configured to be a "CD Mirroring Drive". Any modifications made to the properties of the drive will remain in effect unless revised. Simply rebooting the Virtual DVD Server will not remove alterations made to the configuration of the device.
Configure the Mirroring Drive
- From the main administration page, Select Device Manager .
- Select the DVD drive from the list of device. It will be listed by an ID number (i.e.; CD01, CD03, etc.)
- The CD Settings page will open. Modify this screen as needed and click on the Update button at the bottom of the screen.
- There are two types of CD Function: Direct Access and CD Mirror. This is an either/or choice, the DVD drive cannot function as both types at the same time. Direct Access will allow the physical drive, and its contents, to be accessed by the network. CD Mirror will use the drive to copy CD/DVD data to the hard drive system.
- Select CD Mirror
- Select the appropriate Launch Target, Schedule and Options.
- The "Delete the mirrored image when CD is ejected" option creates a Performance Cache. This is not the same as a Mirror Image. A Performance Cache is a temporary cache of CD data to the hard drive. As soon as the CD/DVD is removed from the drive bay the cache is deleted.
- The "Create Share when Image Complete" option automatically publishes a share for each Imaged CD.
- Insert a CD/DVD into the drive bay. If the standard setup described in step 3.1 is used the imaging process will begin automatically.
Deleting Imaged CDs and DVDs
Deleting CD Images is done through the Device Manager page.
- Select Device Manger.
- Select the hard drive.
- The Hard Drive Settings page will open.
- Place a check in the box next to the volume of any CD/DVD image you wish to delete.
- Click on the OK button when prompted.
Hybrid ISO9660/Apple HFS CDs and DVDs
ISO9660 is a standard for Windows based CD/DVDs. HFS is a standard for Apple Macintosh CD/DVDs. Some CD/DVDs are hybrid dicss - capable of being used by both Windows or Mac computers.
The Virtual DVD Server can mount a hybrid disc as either ISO9660 or HFS, but not as both types. The system default is to mount discs in the following order: ISO, HFS then UDF. If the hybrid disc is used in a Windows environment, the disc will automatically be available as an ISO disc: this type mounts first.
If the hybrid disc is used in a Mac environment the order in which the disc types mount must be changed so that the hybrid disc is recognized as an HFS volume.
To change the mounting sequence
- Open the main administration web page.
- Select the Server Settings page.
- Click on the Others button.
- Use the drop down list to change the mounting sequence to HFS->ISO->UDF.
- Click on the Apply button.
- The system must be rebooted for the change to take effect.
