Virtual DVD Server - CDH

Shares
A share is a network resource. Microsoft defines a share as "an item such as a file, folder, or printer that another computer has made available for you to use on the network." When using a Windows-based workstation a share is visible as a yellow folder in Network Neighborhood.

Novell uses the term "volume" for the same concept. These two words, share and volume, are used interchangeably in these technical pages.
The Virtual DVD Server has four shares that are created by the system itself. These are CACHE, CDROM, MIRROR and SYS. Because these shares are created by the system they cannot be removed.

The SYS share exists for use by Novell clients. No CD/DVDs are accessed via this share.

All Performance Cached CD/DVDs will appear as subdirectories of the CACHE share.

All Direct Access CD/DVDs will appear as subdirectories of the CDROM share.

All Mirror Images will appear as subdirectories of the MIRROR share.

A user can access these types of CDs by connecting to the appropriate share.

Create New Shares
The DVD drive of the Virtual DVD Server can be configured to automatically publish a share for every Imaged CD. If this option is set an Imaged CD is available as part of the MIRROR share, and is also an independant share (visible at the same level as the MIRROR share). This configuration will use the Volume Name of the Imaged CD as the Share Name.

If this option was not set, and a new share is needed follow these steps.

  1. From the main Administration page, select Share Manager.
  2. Click on the Volume List button.
  3. Click on the Share a Volume button.
  4. A list of all Imaged CDs (volumes) is presented.
  5. Place a check in the Share Enable column for each desired CD.

The individual share is published immediately. Access rights can be assigned to the share.

Group Shares
Several Imaged CDs can be colleted together in a Group Volume. The CACHE, CDROM and MIROR volumes are the default Group Volumes of the Virtual DVD Server. Any Group Volume that you create will function in the same way; all Imaged CDs asigned to the share appear as subdirectories of the share.

  1. Click on the Group Manager button.
  2. Use the radio button to select a New Share option: Default Name or User Defined.
    1. If User Defined is chosen, enter the share name is the box.
  3. Select the shares to be added from the Volume name list on the left.
  4. Click on the Add button.
  5. The volumes will be added to the Members of Grouping list.
  6. Click on the Change Members button at the bottom of the page.

The group share is published immediately. Access rights can be assigned to the share.
