Installing a legal research program

Premise
CDVOLUME.INI
If the Premise program is installed using the Setupnet network option, Books may be added to Premise in two ways: using the local installation, or by modifying the cdvolume.ini file. The following steps detail the cdvolume.ini option.

  1. Each workstation must have a mapping to the virtual volume of the Virtual CD Server, and one to the directory where Premise is located
  2. After the initial installation of Premise, but before each workstation runs setupnet.exe, browse Network Neighborhood to locate the subdirectory where Premise was installed.
  3. Open the Library subdirectory.
  4. Open the cdvolume.ini file.
  5. There are three sections in this file. In the [drive] section insert the line x=tree (where x is the letter for the mapping to the virtual volume). Save and close the file.
  6. Launch Premise.
  7. At the Welcome screen select the Install a Book option.
  8. Select the Install CD-ROM option.
  9. Select all Premise data discs by selecting the first Premise title on the list and holding down the Shift and Arrow keys until all Premise titles are highlighted.
  10. Click on the Install All button. Every title will be added to the Premise library.
    1. Only one user on the network needs to install new Books as they become available. Every user will access the one update as s/he launches Premise from a workstation.
  11. At each additional workstation on the network, run setupnet.exe. When Premise is launched at that workstation all the Books will be listed.

The following is West Group's explanation of the cdvolume.ini file:

"PREMISE 3.x supports tree structure (i.e., CD servers that organize CDs into subdirectories or volumes that are map-rooted). This section explains a common way to configure PREMISE to support tree structure. You must first edit the file named CDVOLUME.INI in the subdirectory where your PREMISE system files are located, e.g., F:\APPS\WESTPUB\LIBRARY. The CDVOLUME.INI file contains information about how PREMISE locates the data on the discs. A second CDVOLUME.INI file can be located in the user's working directory, e.g., \WESTPUB\PREMISE, and can contain any changes required for a specific user.
The following is an example of a CDVOLUME.INI file that supports tree structure:

[network]

[drive]

//if server and volume are mapped to a drive letter, to j: for example, do the following
j=tree
//otherwise, if server and volume are not mapped to a drive letter, do the following
\\server\volume=tree

[volume]

Note: Lines beginning with '//' are remarked out."

There are six commands that may be used in the cdvolume.ini file: each is detailed in the chart below. No spaces are used in the command line. This chart assumes that V is the letter used for the mapping to the networked CD-ROM data.

v=tree This command is used if the CDs are mounted as subdirectories of a ROOT volume,
v=network This command points to a specific network CD-ROM drive.
v=local This command defines the network drive as a local drive.
v=jukebox This command enumerates the drives of a local CD changer and stop Premise from mounting every changer drive. By not mounting all drives the "swapping" effect of the changer will not cause delays in accessing volume information.
v=unavailable This command will exclude a drive from appearing as an accessible drive.
v=redirectable This command is used in conjunction with the [volume] section of the cdvolume.ini file. It establishes that CD-ROM data is located in the network. The [volume] section must then specifically list each WPCxxxxx disc and its UNC path location on the netwok.
