Installing a legal research program
Premise
Direct Copy to a Hard Drive
The West Group Premise© program has a built in "copy to hard drive" function. In order for Premise this option ro work, Premise must "see" specific license files in the Library subdirectory of the hard drive onto which you wish to copy. The program assumes that the user will only be copying onto the hard drive where the program itself is stored (C:). In order that an additional hard drive(s) may used for storage these license files must first be copied onto each additional storage drive.
- First, determine the drive letter of the new hard drive(s) by opening My Computer or the Windows Explorer and noting the drive letters.
- Open the Windows Explorer and double-click on the C:\WestPub directory. Drag-and-drop the Library subdirectory to the new hard drive. You can move the subdirectory to a mapped network drive. Be sure that the correct path to this new subdirectory is known. For example: D:\Library or F:\West\Library.
- To prepare Premise for this new location: start Premise, access the Help menu, and change the File Location of the Library files to the path you just created on the new hard drive. You must exit and restart Premise for this change to take effect.
- Insert a CD into a CD-ROM drive.
- Start Premise and select the Install a Book option.
- Select the Install CD Book option.
- Choose the disc(s) you wish to add to the library from the volume list. Place a check in the Copy to Hard Drive box.
- Click on Install.
- During the copying process the hourglass will NOT appear. The mouse will still work, but the computer may otherwise appear to be "frozen". The copy process may take from 5 to 25 minutes, depending on the speed of your computer and the size of the CD.
When one hard drive is full, copy the Library subdirectory to a new hard drive and change the file location listing to this new drive. When Premise is restarted, any discs copied to the initial hard drive will not be listed after the file location is changed. This doesn't indicate a loss of data. It is an expected occurance
When you are done copying discs to the hard drive(s), titles installed to any other hard drives must be added to the Premise library list. Select File, and then Library Maintenance. Click on Install Magnetic Book. Select the path (ex: x:\library) in the Directories window for each copied disc you wish to install (ex: wpc99999) and click on OK twice. Repeat this for all books not already installed.
You can share this Premise installation with other users in a Peer Network.
