Virtual CD Tower Troubleshooting

The floppy drive is exhibiting CD drive characteristics.
There are too many virtual drives. The letters A, B, and C are reserved for floppy drives and the internal hard drive of the computer. Any additional internal hard drives/partitions and CD drives must also be accounted for. Add to this the number of external hard, CD, tape, and Zip/Jazz drives. The remaining number subtracted from 26 is the total number of letters available for virtual drives. Decrease the number of available virtual drives to match this total.

When attempting to build a Virtual CD the Image Builder applet freezes or crashes.
Option 1: In the Image Builder, on the "Selecting the Source" screen check the box that says "Use Sector Read Scan".

Option 2: Open the Control Panel, and then the System Properties. Select the Device Manager tab. Under the Disk Drives listing double-click on the hard drive of the Virtual CD Tower (ex. Quantum ST64). Select the Settings tab. Under the Options heading there is a box next to Disconnect. Remove the check mark in the box. Click on OK. Follow the same steps to remove the Disconnect option for the physical CD drive of the Virtual CD Tower (ex. Sony CDU625). Click on OK at the bottom of the Device Manager window. Reboot the computer.

The Virtual CD-ROM software installs fine, and I can image Virtual Discs, but when I try to insert that Virtual Disc in a Virtual Drive Bay, the computer hangs, or the program on the disc fails.
The Windows CD-ROM caching must be turned off. If left on Windows tries to caches the Virtual Disc as both a CD and a hard drive data file (and confusing itself in the process).

  1. Open the Windows 95 Control Panel.
  2. Double-click on System.
  3. Select the Performance tab, and click on the File System button.
  4. Selct the CD-ROM tab. The drop down window next to Optimize Access Pattern For: should contain the words No Read-Ahead.
  5. Click on OK after any changes. Close all windows. Reboot the computer when prompted.
