Windows NT Workstations can display a message box with the caption and text of your choice before a user logs onto the sysem. When enabled, this creates a warning message which contains an"OK" button. Users must click on the button to proceed to the logon screen.
By clicking on the OK button the user is agreeing that he/she can be held legally liable if any attempt is made to use the computer without proper authorization; if any attempt is made to modify the computer settings, or add/remove/alter programs.
The absence of such a notice could be seen as an open invitation to modify the system. The logon notice can also be used in settings (i.e., a library public-access PC) where users might require instruction on how to supply a user name and password for the appropriate account.
To display a legal notice, use the Registry Editor to create or assign the following registry key values on the workstation to be protected:
- Open the Registry Editor by clicking on Start, select Run and type Regedit. Click on OK.
- Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WinodwsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
- Select the String Value LegalNoticeCaption
- From the Edit menu, select the Modify option. Or right-click on the selected String Value.
- Enter your tile for the message in the Value data box.
- Click on OK
- Select the String Value LegalNoticeText
- From the Edit menu, select the Modify option. Or right-click on the selected String Value.
- Enter the message text in the Value data box.
- Click on OK
- Close the Registry Editor.
When the PC reboots the Legal Notice will be displayed.
