NAS FileZerver
Backing Up the Data using ARCserve or NetWorker
ARCserve and NetWorker can be used to backup the data, however these options are not integrated into the NAS server.
ARCserve7 for NetWare
Follow these steps to backup the FileZerver.
- Open the ARCserve Manager.
- Select the Backup Manager.
- Click on the Source tab.
- Right-click on Preferred Shares/Machines and select Add Object.
- The Network Provider window will open. Use the drop down list to select the type of network you are operating under: Novell NetWare or Windows NT.
- Enter the UNC path of the FileZerver in the Machine Name field.
- Remember that the FileZerver Novell NetWare emulation appends _NW to the name assigned to the unit. For example, if the FileZerver unit's name is NAS1 the UNC path is \\NAS1_NW.
- Click on the Add button.
- Click on the Close button to close the window.
- The FileZerver now appears in the Preferred Shares/Machines tree.
- Click on the + symbol to expand the tree and expose every share in the FileZerver.
- A green box appears beside every folder. To select a folder for backup click on the box. When a file or folder has been selected the box next to the items name is solid green. Do NOT backup the SYS volume. This is a virtual volume that exists to meet a Novell requirement. Any attempt to backup the share will cause the entire backup to fail.
- Click on the Destination tab.
- Select the appropriate backup device and media.
- Click on the Run/Schedule icon (traffic light) on the icon bar, or select the Run/Schedule option from the Backup menu.
- The Security and Agent Information window will open.
- Highlight the share(s) in the window.
- Click on the Security button.
- A username must be entered in the field.
- ARCserve doesn't appear to care what username is entered. You can use the default administrator for the FileZerver: admin/admin. You can use a full context Novell username: .CN=Admin.O=CORP.
- Do NOT click on the Agent button. You will be prompted to enter the IP address of the FileZerver. The unit does not have an ARCserve agent loaded onto it, and the backup fill fail if you configure the job to use the agent.
- Click on the OK button.
- The Submit Job window will open.
- Use the Run Now/Run On radio buttons to configure when the job will start.
- Use the Source Priority button to configure the order in which shares will be backed up.
- Click on OK to begin the backup.
Known Issues
| Issue |
Explanation |
Resolution |
The following error messages will appear in the job log
E3201 File System TSA not loaded on server XXXXXX_NW
E3196 SMS required to preserve LONG name space information.
E3031 Failed to scan VOL:\DIR ()'s space restrictions, ff
|
Errors 3201 and 3196 appear once because the FileZerver doesn't load the NLM that permits Novell to process long filenames.
Error 3031 appears for every directory that is backed up. |
3196: ARCserve uses the presence of the long namespace NLM to establish whether long filenames are supported by the server. Access to any volume with a non-DOS name (one that contains spaces or non-DOS characters) will be denied. The practical upshot of this conflict is that even though long filenames can exist on the NAS server, ARCserve cannot backup the files if they are in a folder with a long filename.
3031: The NetWare emulation of the FileZerver doesn't use the same set of attributes for directories that true NetWare does. Computer Associates has determined that the data backs up correctly even though this error message appears. |
| Error 3022 Invalid File. |
Some FileZerver system files cannot be backed-up. Selecting these files for inclusion in the backup will not cause the job to fail. |
If you wish to exclude these files they are: the lost+found directory, and .du and quota.user files. |
| Open files are not backed up. |
Because ARCserve agents can't be loaded onto the FileZerver, the ability to backup open files is denied. Any file that is open during the job will NOT be backed-up. |
There is no solution for this issue. |
| When attempting to backup the SYS volume of the NAS server, the backup job fails |
The SYS volume of the NAS server is a virtual volume. It exists solely to meet a Novell requirement. |
Do NOT backup the SYS volume. Any attempt to backup the share will cause the entire backup to fail. |
ARCserve 2000 for NT
Follow these steps to backup the NAS server.
- On the NT server, map a drive to the NAS server share you wish to backup.
- Open the ARCserve Manager.
- Select the Backup Manager.
- Click on the Source tab.
- Expand the My Computer listing. The mapped drive will appear.
- A green box appears beside every folder. To select a folder for backup click on the box. When a file or folder has been selected the box next to the items name is solid green.
You can use a valid NT domain administrator's username: Administrator/password.
Legato NetWorker for NT
NetWorker uses client agents to facilitate the backup of workstations and servers. The FileZerver will emulate an NT server, but doesn't actually run the NT kernel. This prohibits the FileZerver thin server from loading the NetWorker client agent.
Follow these steps to backup the FileZerver.
- Map a network drive(s) on the NT server running NetWorker to the FileZerver share(s) to be backed up.
- Open the NetWorker User program.
- Click on the Backup button. The drive mapping created in Step 1 appears as a folder under My Computer using the name sharename on servername.
- Use the Mark button to identify which files/folders are to be backed up.
- Click on the Start button to begin the backup process.
