Adaptec 2920 PCI SCSI card
The Adaptec 2920 PCI SCSI (pronounced "Scuzzy") card is a Plug-and-Play device. In a Windows 9x/ME environment the card should be recognized by the computer during bootup, and the correct drivers automatically installed. For the purpose of these instructions the phrase Virtual CD Tower will refer to both the Virtual CD Tower and the Virtual DVD Tower unless otherwise noted.

Installing the SCSI Card

  1. Shut down the PC and open the casing, exposing the expansion slots.
  2. The Adaptec 2920 PCI card is inserted into a white PCI slot. Insert the card, making sure that the card is firmly seated.
  3. Attach the data cable from the rear of the card to the Virtual CD Tower.
  4. Connect the Virtual CD Tower to a power supply or power surge strip.
  5. Turn on the Virtual CD Tower.
  6. Allow for approximated 15 seconds to elapse before powering on the PC. This allows the internal devices of the unit to "spin up".

A properly connected and operating Virtual CD Tower will give the following messages during the computer's bootup process.

Adaptec AHA2920/2920A BIOS v3.2
Copyright 1997 Adaptec, Inc. All Rights Reserved.
Scanning Controller 0...
SCSI ID #3 <brand> CD-ROM <model>
SCSI ID #4 <brand> Hard Drive <model>

The Virtual DVD Tower will have a similar message except it will list the 2940 card. The hard drive of the Virtual DVD Tower takes approximately 10 seconds for spin up and recognition. This is normal.

If this message does not appear it means that the card is improperly seated (try again once the computer is turned off), defective (very rare), or not recognized due to resource conflict within the system.

If the SCSI ID... portion of the message does not appear it means that there is a loose, broken, or improperly configured wire in the SCSI "chain" that connects the Virtual CD Tower devices internally, or externally, to the card. Be sure to check for any bent pins where the cable connects to the card, and make sure the tower has a terminator plug firmly attached. Also make sure there is power flowing to the Virtual CD Tower system, and that it is turned on.

Once Windows9x/ME starts up, a box containing the following message will appear.

New Hardware Found
Adaptec AHA-2920/2920C PCI SCSI Host Adapter
Windows is installing the software for your new hardware.

If the system cannot locate the correct driver for this card you will be prompted for the Windows9x/ME CD or the Adaptec EZ-SCSI disk. If your Windows9x/ME disc does not have the correct driver for the 2920 card, the diskette labeled ADAPTEC EZ-SCSI v4.01a has the correct file, which is named AIC789XX.MPD. Follow the directions on the screen to direct Windows9x/ME to load the driver.

Preparing the system for Imaging Virtual CD Discs
For smooth and error free disc copying it is necessary to turn off the CD caching feature of Windows 9x/ME.

  1. Open the Control Panel.
  2. Double-click on System.
  3. Select the Performance tab.
  4. Click on the File System button.
  5. Select the CD-Rom tab.
  6. Change the drop down window for "Optimize access pattern" to No Read Ahead.
  7. Click on Apply.
  8. Click on OK. Restart the computer.

The system is now physically configured to access the Virtual CD Tower using its Virtual CD-ROM software component.
